You drive up to your house every day. You glance up at the roof. It looks... fine. Maybe a little dark in spots, but nothing alarming. Here's the thing — from the ground, you're only seeing about 30% of your roof's actual surface. The rest is hidden by pitch, angles, dormers, and distance. That's exactly why we fly a drone before every single job.
Stand in your driveway and look up. You can see the front slope of your roof and maybe a sliver of one side. But what about the back? The valleys? The areas behind dormers and chimneys? The north-facing slope that gets almost no direct sunlight? Those are exactly the areas where biological growth thrives — and they're completely invisible from the ground.
Traditional roof inspections require someone to climb a ladder and walk across your shingles. That means foot traffic on your roof, which can crack tiles, dislodge granules from asphalt shingles, and damage slate. It also means the inspector is looking at the roof from a few feet away, not from above — so they're still missing the big picture.
When we fly our inspection drone over your roof, we're capturing high-resolution imagery of every square inch. Here's what we typically find that homeowners had no idea was there:
Gloeocapsa Magma — the blue-green algae responsible for those dark streaks — doesn't start as dramatic black lines. It begins as faint, barely-visible discoloration that's impossible to spot from the ground. By the time you can see the streaks from your driveway, the colony has been feeding on your shingles for months or even years. Our drone catches it early, when treatment is simplest and most effective.
Moss loves moisture and shade. It tends to establish itself in roof valleys, behind chimneys, and on north-facing slopes — all areas you can't see from the ground. What looks like a clean roof from the front can have thick moss mats on the back slope, lifting shingles and trapping water underneath. We've pulled up to houses where the homeowner said "my roof is pretty clean" and the drone footage showed an entirely different story on the back side.
Lichen is the most stubborn organism we deal with. It's a symbiotic combination of algae and fungus that anchors itself into the roof surface with root-like structures called rhizines. On slate roofs, lichen can look like natural patina from the ground. From above, our drone reveals the true extent — often covering 40-60% of the roof surface when the homeowner thought it was maybe 10%.
Leaves, pine needles, and organic debris accumulate in valleys and behind penetrations. This debris holds moisture against the roof surface, accelerating biological growth and potentially causing water damage. From the ground, you can't see any of it. From the air, it's immediately obvious where debris is building up and where water flow is being blocked.
On asphalt shingle roofs, the drone reveals areas where granules have been lost — whether from age, foot traffic from previous contractors, or biological growth. These bare spots are vulnerable to UV damage and accelerated deterioration. Identifying them helps us (and you) understand the overall condition of the roof and whether treatment alone will solve the problem or if there are areas that may need attention from a roofer.
We've been flying drone inspections across Columbus, Dublin, Powell, New Albany, Upper Arlington, and dozens of other Central Ohio communities. Here are patterns we see repeatedly:
The drone inspection isn't just a sales tool — it's the foundation of our treatment plan. Here's how we use the footage:
Nothing. Every Forza roof inspection is free and comes with no obligation. We fly the drone, review the footage, and walk you through what we found. If treatment makes sense, we'll give you a straightforward quote. If it doesn't, we'll tell you. Either way, you'll know exactly what's on your roof — something you can't get from staring up from the driveway.
Your roof is one of the most expensive components of your home, and it's the one you see the least of. A drone inspection takes the guesswork out of roof maintenance. It shows you what's actually happening up there — the good, the bad, and the mossy — so you can make informed decisions about protecting your investment. We've inspected over 1,500 roofs across Central Ohio, and the reaction is almost always the same: "I had no idea it was that bad."
